Converted Keg Question

Mon Nov 07, 2011 8:08 pm

Ok so I have just aquired 2 15.5 gal kegs. One will definately be a brew kettle but what is the better choice for the other mash tun or HLT? I am currently using a 48qt cooler as a mash tun and 2 pots as HLTs.

The real question is how do you want/like to mash; do you want more control or are you happy with single infusion. That is what I asked myself when I decided to get away from my cooler mt and go to a keg. What's nice about a keg is the direct fire since it no longer restricts you to 2-3 temperature rests like a cooler (do to needing to much water) or to raise the temp by decoting. The downside, not not really, is its a litter harder to keep a constant temp with just the keg, you will need either insulation or a burner and must keep it off the ground. The insulatuon is cheap and easy just water heater wrap.

If your happy with your mash regime then make it a hlt with its own burner. It's helpful if your are short on pots, though not practical if you don't have the extra burner.

I have the Cooler MT and am verry happy with this process. I guess if your looking for the ability to do step mashing then your gona need to change up things.

I have a keggle BK and HLT and still use a cooler for a mash tun. I use a HERMS for stepping. I have more kegs, but like that setup. I insulated the keggle HLT and installed an electric heating element.
Aging: Gotlandsdrickå, Baltic Porter in Bourbon barrel, Olde Ale #2 in whiskey barrel
On Draft: Nothing. Building a walk-in cooler right now.

Its a tough one but I think im going with HLT for now. I can still use the cooler for my MLT even if i switch to 10Gal batches. Plus if I decide to change it up all I will have to do is add a false bottom and take out the sight glass to change it from a HLT to a MLT.
