Cleaning siphons

Mon Sep 12, 2011 12:27 pm

I have a few siphons that are dire need of a cleaning. I have soaked them in oxyclean and hot water. Then I siphoned the oxyclean mix to clean out the inside of the tubes. The tubes are still discolored and one even has shit (not litteral shit) on the inside, what is a better way to clean the siphons or should I just get more tubing?

Get more tubing. It is very cheap and it is worth my $2 for peace of mind and a clear tube. Once they get a bit used, I use them for lautering. And after that, I use them to vacuum up fish poop. Then they go away for good. :jnj

I do something similar. I dont have a local HBS near me which kind convienent for racking cane and tubing since its cheaper to but clear tubing in bulk at lowes, and replace it when it gets discolored. For racking cane I use that white stiff water line like for refridgerator water lines and join the two parts with a brass fitting that just pushes in & on.

I rinse them imediatly afetr use with warm oxyclean water, and then starsan. This keeps them clean. And when they look scratchy or discolored, replace.

For "Peace of mind" though I bring about 5 gallons of water to a boil for my sparge water and pasturize all my equipment with it (spoons, canes, fittings, hop, and grain bags, etc) and run that boiling water through the canes and tubing Im going to be using in the near future, and then put them in the freezer till I need them. Then adjust my water temp with cool water.
