Char-Broil Natural Gas Hose with Blichmann Floor Burner?

Mon Jun 20, 2011 5:38 pm

I plan on converting a Blichmann floor standing burner to NG and need a hose from the gas stub to the burner. It is 3/8 hose.

Will a Char-Broil Natural Gas Connect Kit work for this burner?

It's here at Lowes:

Is there a better / cheaper solution? Can I use another type of hose to feed the NG to the burner? Must I use a NG specific hose or ?

There is no cheap safe conversion to natural gas. My single Blichmann burner runs off natural gas! It works great on my 20 gallon pot. A 12 foot, 1/2" ID hose supplies it. I figured when I go to multi burner top tier, I would need the 1/2 supply. It is installed with quick disconnects on both ends. The cost of propane is increasing and the cost of a 30 lb. tank is not cheap either. It is really one less hassle to contend with on brewing day! Priceless! You can get the hose and disconnects from http://www.tejassmokers.com. The fittings you can get from http://www.fittingsandmore.com. If you are clueless about plumbing natural gas, get professional help. If you need specifics on fittings contact me. Good Brewing!

gwk453 - I am buying the Blichmann with their NG conversion kit. My gas is stubbed at the patio, 1/2 capped pipe. I plan on replacing the cap with a 90 elbow (downwards) and a gas rated ball valve.

The Char-Broil hose is 3/8 and should (?) be enough to power the burner. The hose comes with a single QD at the gas connection side. I will need another QD for the burner side. I do not plan on adding any other burners.

All of the QD's I have seen have the flow marked on the unit. Do you know if the flow is important? I can't see how that plays a role in the gas movement.

If you don't mind, please point tell me which QD's you used.

Tejassmokers says:
"Choose 3/8" ID natural gas appliance connector hose to deliver gas up to 60,000 BTU/hr (at 1.6" WC pressure drop)"

"Choose 1/2" ID natural gas appliance connector hose to deliver gas 70,000 to 115,000 BTU/hr (at 1.3" WC pressure drop)"

The Blichmann is rated at 60,000 BTU so it looks like the 3/8 hose will work.

I'll call Tejas tomorrow.

Sweet seems like you all set for natural gas!
Remove the cap, dope the theads, and install a reducer elbow 1/2 X 3/8 in. Short 3/8 nipple to a Tejas 3/8 QD ball valve #104007@ $39.95. No gas will flow without the mating QD plugged in. In other words a child or some ass hat can't inadvertantly vent gas accidentally to dick with your gas bill. You need one #401207 3/8 male plug QD @ $12.95 and one # 104001 3/8" QD Socket @ $24.95. I got a 12 Ft hose and am glad I did! (I was thinking shorter)#100484 @$44.95

For brass ( SAE 45 degree Flare Fittings ) You need two male adapters 3/8 Flare X 3/8 Male NPT which you can get @ Lowe's or Home Depot. The tuff part which are essential to connect to the Blichmann orifice valve which is a 3/8 male flare, I got from http://www.fittingsandmore are one #10-136, a 3/8 female flare Union, and last but not least get four Copper Gaskets #10-087 3/8 " to use on all 3/8 flare connections and have a couple of spares. Copper forms an excellent seal! Their shipping is a little slow so order soon.

I sized down to your 3/8 ID which should be fine@ 60,000 BTU
I dealt with Cheyenne @ Tejas who was very helpful @ phone # 713-222-0077

Do you have any photos of your handy-work? I'd like to see what you have built in regards to the burner.

Thank you for the help.

Do you know why the male NG quick disconnect has the bar across the tip?

Is it meant to depress a valve or .... ?

Flow - measurement of the amount of fluid (Volume) per unit time. More gas = more heat...........Yes, important......I believe residential systems are reduced to 1/2 Psi to the home after the reducing valve. Not much allowable fuel line pressure drop.
