blichmann auto sparge for RIMS

Blichmann says you can use the auto-sparge for a RIMS has anyone tried it? Will the odd piece of grain clog it up? Looking for some feedback before I buy one

I have just added one to my HERMS system. I have had no problems with it plugging at all. Batch efficiency went up a ton on my first two batches using it. Only draw back I have see on my system is having a slow rise in mash temp changes. Other than that a great addition to my system. I love that I only set the out flow and the Auto-sparge takes care of the in flow. Worth every penny.

OK...I have to ask how hard will it be for me to drill the hole in a MoreBeer HD 15-gal pot to install an Autosparge?

I bought two step drills from Harbor Freight. Will these do the job?

Assuming there's nothing special about the MoreBeer pot, super easy. Just drill the pilot hole with a 3/16" bit, then follow with the step bit. Try and "feather" it in--stop before you think you need to and keep checking the fit until its snug. I've drilled a hole for both the AutoSparge and the Brewmometer and neither took me more than 10 minutes.

The Auto-Sparge is great, but I had one initial problem with it. During recirc no matter how slow the flow was the grain kept whirlpooling, which killed my efficiency. So I just added my old CPVC sparge arm to the end of the hose. I took the caps off the end and added elbows in case large chunks of grain ever made it through. I'm not sure if anyone else had this problem, but you may want to watch out for it.

I know a guy who did. I thought it was a mistake. It'll work for a while. but eventually the valve seat will fail. It has to with all the heat and acid.

I priced out those valves in SST. It is like a Grand for one. and there is nothing different about the SST ones other than the metal.

Strikes me as a real opportunity for any one with a lathe and a miller.
HEY~!! It's a hobby~!! It's NOT supposed to make sense~!!

You wont have any problems plugging up an auto sparge...there is a ⅜" through hole bored completely through & makes a 90 degree turn and a large barrel valve slides & controls flow...youre good with rims/hermes. Happy brewing!
