Wort chiller height for keggle

Thu Dec 03, 2009 11:06 pm

For the 15 gallon sanke kegs guys, how tall does an immersion wort chiller have to be to clear the top? What wort chiller are you using? Midwest supplies offers a 50' chiller that is 23 inches to the top bend, where the hose fits on. Is that high enough?

Thanks,
Doug

I assume you are refering the thier deluxe chiller.

My sanke kettle is 23" high overall. My chiller sits on top of the false bottom dip tube so is a couple of inches off the bottom. Even if the chiller sits on the bottom, 23" will be high enough to clear the top of the keg. I made my own chiller out of a 60' coil of 5/8" copper from Home Depot. Making your own will save you $30-$40. 1/2" OD is fine. Just wind the tube around a corny keg or something similar in diameter (about 8 1/2"). With the extra length you could cut off 10' and make a pre-chiller to put in an ice water bath and speed cooling even more.

That's the one. I made a 25' out of 1/2 OD and it kinda sucked making it and the bends etc, even with one of those spring thing tubing benders. I am putting this one on my Christmas list because I plan on making the move from 5 gallon to 10 gallon soon, and I don't think the 25' will cut it for 10 gallons. 5 Gallons, I get where I need to be within 20 minutes. The 25' would make a good pre-chiller.

+1 on the pre-chiller. I use the 25' x 3/8" inch coil that was my original chiller to pre-chill. I even freeze it in a block of of ice. Chill on dude! :pop
