Looking for a good, cheap water filter

Tue Sep 29, 2009 11:46 pm

Well, I got away without using a filter for 4 years living in NYC.
The Portland water is very good, but there is a slight chloramine aroma. So it's time to buy a filter.
This is a pretty cheap one I saw, what do you folks think?

I guess my only concern is if it will be a problem for this thing to sit around with water in it between brews. I think there are some other filter types, like the ones you can make a Randall out of, that you can take apart to dry between uses.

Or, any other suggestions on specific models?

There is a much easier way to deal with choramine. First off be sure it is chloramine by checking with the water company or by letting some stand over night. If it doesn't smell like chlorine next day it wasn't chloramine and, as you will have just demonstrated, letting it stand over night will clear it. If indeed it is chloramine add 1 Campden tablet (crushed) to each 20 gallons of water being treated. Do not worry about any residual sulfur dioxide smell. It will either volatalize when the water is heated or reduce (in the redox sense) something in the mash. Cheap, simple, easy.

Thanks everyone. Pretty funny, I was checking Home Depot and Amazon and didn't even think to check Morebeer.

I know it's Chloromine. I just tasted my first beer off draft, and I'm not picking up any medicinal aromas or flavors, but I can smell a funky swimming pool smell coming from my sparge water once it's heated.

So I may do the Campden tablet solution until I start getting paychecks again. Other than Choramine, the water report looks great. Very low mineral content.

Walmart sells RV water filters. They are carbon filters.
They last for a few months. They run $20.

I used to use them before I bought a carbon block filter and rigged it into the stand. I bought the block filter a Home Depot for like $50.
