More Beer Cooler Ball Valve Kit Not Fitting, Need Help

Sun Sep 06, 2009 4:17 am

So I bought 2 of the stainless cooler kits from more beer for my 5 gallon igloo coolers. they don't fit. the wall of the cooler is super thin. The more beer kit, or to be more correct, the fermentap kit comes with 1 o-ring and a large threaded nipple. There should be two o-rings and a close nipple like all of other kits come.

I want to return this craptastic kit and build my own, the only thing i can't figure out is what sized o-rings i would need to order from mcmaster carr. I've seen a lot of directions and have even gone to home depot to make a brass setup, but even with a close nipple 1 o-ring ain't cutting it. I know i need two but I see kits coming with 2 different sized ones...

can any one help? is anyone else using the $20 walmart igloo coolers that have super thin walls by the port?

You only need one 0-ring on the inside. I'm not sure what specific parts are included in there besides what you mentioned. Most of the weldless kits have: 1) a threaded nipple, 2) an o-ring, 3) a washer, and 4) two things that thread on to either side. These can be a threaded coupling, a ball valve, a nut, etc. All you need is to compress the o-ring against the washer on the inside and you will have a watertight seal.

If it is like my experience with the 48qt rectangular rubbermaid Gottt cooler, it does take some creativity but I was able to make it work just fine with the B3 kit and a small spacer make from copper tubing. I posed my experience in another thread. Maybe it is helpful.

If its a thinwalled cooler where the spicket is then a weldless kettle kit would work. I think the cooler kits are designed for an insulated cooler at the spigot. Alot of the newer coolers thin out to a thinwall at the spigot these days. You could go to a boat shop and get a 1" or 3/4" nipple pretty cheap.
