Built in wort chiller

Sat Aug 15, 2009 7:45 pm

I have 2 extra 1/2 inch couplings on a kettle, I was thinking about installing a permanent wort chiller, how would that affect my beer with a 90 min boil? I have seen this set up a couple times, and it seems convenient, just need a little input, if copper is a no go, I could do SS tubing, but that's probably bankrupt me...

Copper is just fine. Stainless doesn't conduct heat nearly as well as copper. On top of that a little bit of copper is good for fermentation.

The only downside I see is that it would be more inconvenient to clean the brewkettle and coil combination.

I thought about the cleaning angle as well, I'll either have to be vigilant about cleaning immediately after a brew or design it so I can remove it easily for cleaning, but if I have to do that I should just use my immersion.......built in is cooler though
