48qt Rubbermade cooler Mash Tun - PITA

Sun Aug 02, 2009 12:20 pm

This project was started by the original owner of the cooler. I see why he abandoned it and went witha 15g keg as a mash tun. I was determined to make this work and eventually did but not without a bunch of grief. Nothing was gonna work right. My nipples are too short. My nuts either don't reach or are too close. I almost melted the damn thing in the firepit but decided give it one more try.

I went to the folks at More Beer in Los Altos (B3) who hooked me up with a pre-built kit for a weldless stainless steel valve. The drain plug was already popped out and a hole was drilled for the nipple to poke through. The cooler is way too thick though and I struggled trying to make it work. I finally dremmeled a larger hole in the outer casing so I could get the 1 5/8" washer against the inner casing. Still the nipple was too short with the tightening nut on the near end of the nipple and too uch nipple with the nut on the far end. After an hour of frustration and a roll of teflon tape, I came up witha solution to have the nut on the outer threads of the nipple and use a nipple ring to cover the distance between my nut and the washer. After an hour at home depot and $50 (why the hell can't I go to home depot and not spend at least $50??) I was back at it. I cut some copper tubing into a 3/4" ring and slid it over my nipple against my nut then pushed my nippe through the inner casing and attached the coupler to my nipple using the appropriate number of washers and o-rings. I cranked it down backed away and admired my hack job. I filled it with water and headed over to a friends to brew a MaltyPA.

When I checked it later and again this morning, my nipple didn't leak one drop. Heed this warning. Be prepared to be creative cuz making this shit can be a bitch!

I bought a 100 qt cooler and a bunch of parts to do the same thing you are trying, and I give up. I'm taking the cooler back tomorrow and sending the hardware back to B3. I'm saving for a brew sculpture.

You could simplify things considerably if you use a drilled stopper or mini keg bung and just run the copper tubing right through it. If you have a slight interference between the tubing and the ID of the hole, it will be leak free. The tricky part is enlarging the hole on the stopper if you want to use 1/2" tubing, which I think would require a vice and a hand drill.

This is a photo from Denny's mash tun with plastic tubing, but the concept is essentially the same.

Nice work though, glad you sorted it out. :jnj

Couldn't you just buy a longer nipple? You could use a brass one from HD while waiting for a longer SS one from B3?

Once I started poking my nipple through a bunch of times, I realized it was not the length of my nipple by the number of threads. It seems all the nipples have the same 1/2" or 3/4" thread length. Sure I could have bought a die and increased the threads on my nipple but it would have been a risk of damaging the remaining threads as well as much more cost and challenge.

I was quite smitten with my self for coming up with the copper nipple ring seated firmly against my nut applying the needed length. The bunghole idea would have been much easier but I am sure I would have screwed up my bunghole too.

I am glad I am not the only one completely disregarding the technological aspect of this post and focusing simply on the funny.
