Mashtun for sour mash?

Tue Jul 28, 2009 3:09 pm

If I use my mashtun to sour a full batch of grains how much odor will the plastic absorb? I currently mash in a 10 gallon circular Gott cooler and would like to continue to use it for my regular brews but recently have been interested in trying full batch sour mashing. Anyone have any experience with this or should I just use a 5 gallon plastic fermenter instead?

None. None more odor.

I know this not because i've sour-mashed, but because i have left cleaning out the grains from my cooler mash tun for several days before, with the lid on. the smell was something i'll remember until i die, but the mash tun didn't hang on to any of the stench.

+1 Phil. I think my last brewday last week was the first one where I cleaned out my mashtun the same day I brewed. Spent grains smell naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasty a few days later...
