50 cent boils, here I come!

I've been designing an electric kettle and saving up parts for about 6 months now. I finally made myself sit down and assemble the control box yesterday.

Around New Years, after I had accumulated all the electronics, I was looking for a metal box I could make water proof to house everything. Hammond project boxes were just too damn pricy, and I suck at metal working. The best deal I found on a used project box cost more than my temp. controller, SSR, thermocouple, lights, and switches combined. Soooo....I was digging around in the gun closet and picked up a box of 7.62 and it hit me like a freight train: here was the perfect control box. Large space to mount everything, sealable lid, watertight, and it has style. I think it's perfect for the BN Army, and you can pick these up for about three bucks surplus.

Anyhow... the kettle is finished too, with the exception of two couplings needing some welding. So I'm planning on brewing with my new 5500 watt kettle this weekend at the cost of $0.50 per hour. Hell yeah! :bnarmy:

PS the left switch controls the pump which plugs in to the back.

(heh heh... I said "plugs into the back")

thanks guys. I ran a test run today, to tune the controller. It took 25 minutes to get 10 gallons from 50f to 170f. Lightning fast! Then it took 15 minutes to get from there to a full boil. I think if I put in a motorized stirrer I could reduce the heat up time by a few minutes. Gotta get some insulation soon.
