I don't know the theory behind this, so I can't calculate... but in my experience, I've used two 1500w 120v heaters on two seperate circuits to heat the HLT. It takes me about 30 minutes or less to get 13 gallons to 170f, even in winter. My HLT is not insulated either. It's just a big aluminum Army cook pot. Getting that to boil is another matter... It won't go without a little propane help. However, once I achieve boil, I can maintain it with just the electric heaters.
