B3 Super Chiller...

Mon Feb 20, 2006 10:39 am

I'm about to get a nice new wort chiller and I think the B3 Super Chiller is the one... I will be brewing in a converted keg boil kettle and my only concern is that if I'm only brewing a 5-gallon batch, it might be too big for the batch. Has anyone had any experience using this one with smaller batches? I know, I know... I should just do 10 gallons... :)

If I recall correctly they had a 5 / 10 split chiller...
I'm too lazy to look.

I bought a couple of those for our club's pilot system that uses converted kegs. The wrapping doesn't work well for smaller (5 gal) batches but that's easily remedied by adjusting the coils downward.

They do have a 5/10 split, which they recommend for this use. Is it that one that needs adjusting Danno, or the normal Super Chiller without the split? I'd assume the need to adjust the normal one is why they made the 5/10...?

I was trying to figure out what a 5/10 split was (thinking in terms of percentages). Doh!

Personally, I don't think having the coils at the top or bottom of the wort makes that much difference. Stirring the wort of shaking the coil while cooling have a much greater affect. Yes, go with the 5/10.

The coils for our club's system always have a tendency to get destroyed over time (too many people f'ing with the coil spacing) so I welded a heavy guage copper wire on the coils to keep them evenly spaced and aligned. After almost two years of use, they look just like when they were purchased.
