Runing the Barley Crusher with a drill ???

Hay there,

I just received my Barley Crusher. I have a corded drill but at a glance it looks faster than the recommended 500 RPM. How do you turn the BC at the rite speed? Do I need pulleys? I hope not…

Your drill is probably stamped with the rated RPM's. As long as it is variable speed, just wing it, always error on the slow side and you will be fine. Your crush will tell the story ultimatly. Best of luck and congrats on the new toy.

Made me look at mine - looks like the DeWalt cordless has two speeds 0-450 and 0-1600 - sweet, just need to keep it in low!

As bad rock says, you are looking at the max with the trigger fully depressed. Find the max speed of your drill and back off of max accordingly.

While not the barley crusher, do you remember the monster mill featured several shows ago? This quote is from their website and I cant see why it wouldnt be the same for the barley crusher.

What RPMs should I run my mill at?

The best speed to run all of the drill driven mills at is around 150-250 rpms. Does it have to be exactly 200 rpms? NO WAY. A range of 100-300 is fine, and if you are willing to have a little more flour, then you can run it a little faster. I generally tell folks to run it as slowly as your drill will run it without stalling plus a little more. It usually takes a little more torque to get the mill going than to keep it going, so you will have to give it some more power to start the mill, and then slow it down once you are milling. You should experiment with faster/slower speeds and see what it does to your grain.

I have an old electric drill with one speed.......fast! I've been using it with the BC for over a year with excellent results.
