Barley Crusher

Thu Jul 24, 2008 4:19 pm

Holy COW! I ordered the mill on Tuesday and got it today. I ordered it from BeerSmith's website. It was cheaper, by 0.50. So now I am going to buy a 50 lb sack, hehe... I said "SACK", of 2 Row. I plan on keeping it in my basement at 70* with 50-60% humidity. What would be a good container to put my grain in?

I plan on making some batch next weekend, so I will report how well the factory settings are and what not.

I use these. They're usually relatively cheap at Wally World or the Pet store.

I'm fortunate to have lower humidity. Anyway, look here for some info:

Something I haven't tried, but heard, is to pump some CO2 into the bins, or put a block of dry ice on the bottom. Since CO2 is heavier than air, it supposedly will help keep the grains fresh longer.

Oh right, I forgot to mention that. I keep my grains in my cold room, make sure you either keep them cool or keep them purged with CO2, otherwise you very well may get some critters hatching out of there.

I keep up to 100 lbs of 2-row in a locking lid trashcan, keeps the grain fine for at least 6 months (my usual time for using up 100 lbs). It stays in the basement, I run a dehumidifier from late-June through mid/late-September.

Unless your BC is wacked in transport, the factory settings are fine. I went from low-60's efficiency with a Corona mill to 82%ish when I got my BC.

I would never have about putting CO2 in with your grain. Thanks for the heads up.

i got some of the smaller [20gallon i think] brute trash cans with lids from home depot.

these are also really handy for tossing your spent grain in for transport to compost heaps and whatnot. additionally, you can also get wheels for these trash cans, so when you have 50lb grain, you can just wheel it over to where you need it.

AND THATS NOT ALL!!! [apparently i've gone into marketing mode]

they are also great for keeping kegs iced down at parties. you can get a spare lid and cut a hole in it for the keg to poke through. this keeps the ice from melting quite as fast as it limits air flow.
