What Size is your Freezer, and is it Big Enough?

Thu Jul 17, 2008 4:05 pm

I will be purchasing a Freezer in the very near future for Lagering and Fermentation Control. What I'd like to know is how many Cubic Feet is your Chest Freezer, and do you think it's big enough? I want to be able to fit 3 Carboys into the Freezer along with 2 Blow Off Tube set ups. So I am thinking that it's going to have to be pretty big...

10.2 ft3. I think it would hold three carboys. But to be sure, you should make templates of your carboys and take them to your retailer and see if they fit, presuming you are going to buy somewhere where you can look at one before you buy. I traced out my kegs and CO2 tank on some thin cardboard and made cutouts. I looked a little funny at the store trying to arrange them at the bottom of a freezer, but it worked. And of course you need to measure the height too, and assume a little margin so you can pull things out.

Here's my freezer:

Just remember that lagering and fermentation temp control are two different things. Lagering happens for months at near freezing. Lager fermentation happens for 3-4 weeks at 50 degrees. I think most people just lager at serving temp - if you don't - that's another zone. Add the ability to do ales and your are talking four zones... ouch...

I lager at serving temps. I built "The Mother" so I can control fermentation temps. Obviously I can't do an ale and a lager at the same time (unless I go back to t-shirts for the ales). Gotta make some concessions somewhere. I already have too many fridges (as far as SWMBO is concerned).

BTW - I have a 14.8 CF freezer. I can fit either four carboys (with blow off containers) - or 8 cornies (if I pack 'em tight).

I have a 18.8. It is a great addition to my back yard patio. It is big enough for a bunch of kegs and fermenters.

Buy the bigest one you can afford. The one that works best for me is my GE I think it is a 17.something cubic foot freezer. It holds 3 carboys easily. I recently found one that is a little bigger than my GE on craigs list. The guy was real cool. $50 and he delivered it for me. My .02
Prost!
