I used a hatchet to cut the ends off the tube. It took about 2 seconds.

Here is the way I made the valve for my mash tun. I use the 48qt ice cube by the way.

Yeah one definite improvement I am going to make is to fashion something that keeps the pickup at the very bottom of the cooler, vs. an inch or so above the bottom where the stock spigot is.

That's real simple to do. Take a look at the last photo in the previous post. From the bulkhead fitting run a 45° elbow down to the manifold the braid is hooked to. That will put the pickup right on the floor of the cooler. I had to do that on my first mash tun.

The two 90° elbows I soldered on are angled down so they tough the bottom. That way the entire hose braid stays at the bottom. I also love the fact that I can take everything off and clean it very easily.

P.S. Thanks for the ° lesson Bug. It came in handy again.

You could always just siphon out of the top. Here are some pics of the mash tun of a homebrewer in my club.

I must admit. That's a damn cool idea but could they close the lid? I guess if it doesn't close all the way you could just throw a blanket over it.

The part where it goes from the larger copper tubing and the smaller tubing comes out so you can close the lid. I think he just shoves it inside the other tubing, but a quick release would wok well too.

Quick update - so I ended up getting the pickup right to the floor of the cooler simply by having about 6" of the tubing on the inside of the cooler, so it pretty much keeps itself down - plus the weight of the grain-bed itself keeps it low. (Again problem before was that with only 1" or so of the tubing coming through the hole of the stock spigot, the actual pickup was about 1/5" above the cooler floor). Worked like a charm and no added equipment/pieces at all.
