t this moment photobucket is doing maintenance so I can't even post a link. I was hoping to see some pics of what others are doing.
I am using a converted keg as a kettle.

I use the JZ-Whirlpool method then let settle for 20 min. or so and then drain. After 20 min. the break material has settled and I have clear wort for the carboy.

I wish I could do that I have no pump. How far off the bottom is that dip tube and you have no screen on it at all? Using pellet hops?
How much volume do you figure you lose to the kettle?
Thanks for the pic.

You are welcome. I was using the manual whirlpool method; I just started using a pump this June. The B3 fitting is 1 ¾ of an inch from the rounded edge of the bottom on the keg-kettle. I use pellet hops and no screen. I lose approximately 1-½ gallons but I have found the amount of break in the bottom after settling is largely controlled by my boil and chilling methods. I also found I started getting better hot/cold break after switching to Whirlfoc over reconstituted Irish moss. Using Pope Jamil’s advice I now leave a good portion of break material in the kettle.

So are you writing your recipes as a 6.5 gallon batch and looking for 5 in the fermenter?

I actually factor in the loss using Beer Smith. I plan for a 6-gallon recipe because I have a mix of 5 & 6-gallon carboys.

The link worked for me.
