I was actually thinking about doing that with the plate chiller

If you get around to trying that soon, please post your results. We are going to give that a try too, right before selling off the Therminator on eBay if it doesn't work well.

I have an immersion chiller and a plate chiller. I tried routing my water through the plate chiller first and then through the immersion chiller so that the water would soak up as much heat as possible. I think it saved me 1/2 the water I normally use, but it was a pain in the ass to switch off the water and disconnect the immersion chiller once the wort temp was the same temp as the water coming out of the plate chiller (in just a few minutes).

My ground water is warm enough when I have time to brew that I use a lot of water unless I circulate icewater through the system, but then that uses extra energy. The best solution this wannabe hippy has come up with is filling the clothes washer and a bunch of buckets with the warm water. After laundry, the remaining water isl used for flushing the toilet. It's all a huge pain in the ass but it makes me feel greener.
