Scotchbright is not made of steal wool. You should be fine. I use Scotchbright on stainless all the time.
Is it beer :30 yet?

But those industrial strength ones I linked to were pretty nasty. Also I checked out the 3M website and they might have a cleaning agent in them which would not be good. Hopefully all the PBW diluted whatever might have been in them. I'm going to have a look at the package when I get home. And the Kettle. I havent looked at it since brew day.

It's not the aggressiveness of the grit, it's the metallurgy. There's nothing wrong at all with using synthetic scouring pad. Just don't use a metal one. If you're using BKF on a brand new kettle, it's probably not even needed. I just use a wash cloth & let the BKF do the work.

I have a direct fire mlt and the first time I used the heat to do a step mash I scorched the mash quite well where the false bottom and tun meet. I ended up having to use a wire brush to clean off the char with bkf and haven't had any issues with rusting. If you are that worried, pick up some bkf and let it soak for about 10 minutes and you won't have to worry.(unless that pad in your opinion is worse that a wire brush)
On tap: dunkelwiessen, american brown ale
Fermenting: american barleywine

Picked up some BKF and will soak it this weekend. Found two pages about passivation in How to Brew as well. Thanks all for the help

Those pads are as bad as using steelwool. I called 3M and they contain an abrasive mineral that enables them to scratch stainless. They are apparently laced with aluminum oxide.
Be careful which scrubbers you choose.
Morebeer has some soft cleaning pads I'm going to go with.

Yeah, that'd do it. If it's real bad, I just use the cheap standard green ones. But like I said before I wash them out as soon as they're cool enough to handle & a washcloth with a generous amount of BKF (just shy of being a paste) does the trick in a hurry. Ooooo shiny... :D
