You need to be careful if you boil the stone. Some stones are made of some weirdo glue substance that breaks down when they are heated. Other stones don't have this problem.

Another possibility is that the pump just doesn't have quite enough grunt to push air through the stone and filter.

I always store my ss stone in a plasic bag with its airline attached and I try not to touch the stone because of the 'oil on your fingers' thing.
