I got this one
http://www.brewmasterswarehouse.com/pro ... bar-1-inch

works fine in a 1 gallon glass jar for my setup. Doesn't work, though, on a 3 gallon better bottle. It has too much dome to it.

I use a couple drops of foam control when boiling my starters. The effect seems to carry over when I pitch the smack pack. I have done 2 starters at the 2 liter mark without any foam over.
Good luck! :jnj

I've done as big as 8 Liter starters in a 3 gallon glass carboy with a barbell stirbar.

Nope.

I use mason jars with my homemade stirplate and straight stir bar with no trouble. The jars have domed bottoms. I start from 0 rpm and don't spin too fast. The vortex is only about 3/4" deep. Not sure why it works for me but it does. YMMV

I have done it using one of the 1 gallon jugs from NB....don't use the stir bars with the extra piece in the middle...they will throw too easy, just use a flat stir bar and it will work....granted it can be a pain...but it will work...def not ideal but I have done it before when making starters for lagers...
