I'm impressed with how cheap you guys can get these things. Like I said, the 10 gallons ones are always more than $50 around here. So for us it IS a good deal. A really good deal, in fact.

Nonetheless, now you have even more ammunition to make fun of us in California with.

I think that style of cooler is always a little more expensive because it's a beverage cooler rather than a cooler you put cans and bottles in. I'd say get an Igloo Ice Cube Cooler from Wal-Mart for $20. They aren't round, but they are tall and narrow, plus they have wheels and a handle. Many people use them for mash tuns.

I'll defer my comments about California at this time.

From what I heard, the round coolers are actually made from food grade plastic, but the other ones may not.

If you batch sparge, you will be better off with a rectangular cooler. Batch sparging seems to work better with the shallower grain bed. Also, if you are using SS braid instead of a rigid manifold, this will lessen the weight on the braid and decrease the chance of the braid collapsing.

p.s. all I use my 10 gal round cooler for is for keeping a 3 gallon keg cold for picnics & parties. Fits completely inside with picnic tap and cartridge charger.
