TimX, I would just buy a spider gear from McMaster Carr and do a direct drive. You have the RPM's right and by the looks it's a gear drive motor. By the way nice glass.

This is the mill I have and I was told that the optimum speed is around 200RPM.

Here is a note from Don to me- I don't think he would mind me sharing-

...

I shoot for 200 rpm: 1725 rpm motor with a 1.5" pulley, 9 or 10 " mill pulley. 1/4 HP minimum. Don't scrimp on the hp thinking you can get by with a too small a gear motor that turns the wrong way. Too fast is just as bad, too. Slower is alright. A good hardware store may have a 3/8" ID x 1/2" OD bronze bushing that you can use to adapt the 3/8" driveshaft to a 1/2" bore pulley.

Pulley speed calculation takes into account what's called a pitch circle the diameter of which is usually half way between outer diameter of the belt wrapped around the pulley and the inner diameter on the belt. With a 4L belt subtract .150" inches from the pulley diameter 9-.15=8.85, 1.5-.15=1.35, making the ratio 1.35/8.85=.1525. X 1725=263rpm, which isn't bad. With a 3L belt it's 9-.35=8.65, 1.5-.35=1.15, 1.15/8.65=.133 X 1725=229 a little better. Obviously a 10"+ pulley would be a further improvement. None of it has to be perfect as long as you're in the approximate range.

Thanks for taking the time to find me.

I agree, use the spider gear and direct drive that. Your motor looks very similar to mine. The direct drive works nicely and you wont get your drunken fingers stuck in any pulleys. Even worse if your brewing with no pants you have to really watch those pulleys!

Well, I can not use a spider gear with my motor mill combo. The output shaft on the motor turns clockwise, so, the mill would then turn counter clockwise. That will not mill any grain in my mill.

But I would like to use a spider gear. I like the way they look and not have to deal with a belt.

I think what they mean by "spider gear" is the two aluminum couplings with the "spider-looking" rubber piece in the middle. It does not change the direction - so if your motor spins clockwise - so will your grain mill. Kinda along the lines of this (your part numbers might be different - depending on the shaft sizes):

Facing the out put shaft on the motor it turns clockwise. So if you have the shaft on the motor facing the shaft on the grain mill, the mill will turn counterwise. It is like looking at the shaft from the other end.

If I have both the shaft on the motor and the shaft on the mill pointed the same way conected with pullies and a belt they will then turn the same way.

I said Shaft.

Thanks! I think that is the wrong bodine- its only 1/12 HP. the beefy was 1/3 of a HP and about 1/2 of the price :)

Thanks for looking though!
