Re: Mash tun question

Thanks for all the advice and info. Here's an update. I took my rectangular cooler and attached some SS braid to the spigot. Instead of a water supply line (which i couldnt find for less than $19) i went to the auto parts store and picked up some SS Braid thats used to cover fuel lines. It was $7 for a ten foot roll and i didnt have to go through the trouble of removing any inner tubing. I also had a few questions about the grain crushing the braid but i see that has already been answered. im hoping to make the maiden voyage tomorrow. Cheers

Just an update. I used my new mash tun for the first time today. Did the blonde out of BCS the runoff went quick and smooth and i hit my preboil gravity within 1 point. Thanks again for all the advice and tips im sure my first attempt would not have gone as well without them.

I also actually used my new SS braid mash tun today. Made a huuuuuuuuuge difference. So much better than the manifold I was using. Had my vorlauf running clear in half the time. Thanks for the tips guys!

I use a SS braid inside a rectangle cooler I got from Home Depot for $15. The braid I used is from a toilet supply line (new) and it was the 18" long. I folded it over and kept 2-3" inside, clamped it, then ran it into 1/2" CPVC pipe with 2 rubber gaskets, and then out the side to a copper union and ball valve. here are a couple of pics.

hope this helps. Cheers!

here's the one that i built last week. as you can tell, i just brewed with it and it still needs cleaning. it really works great though! no problems with my runoff, and the cooler bottom works great for channeling the wort along the bottom

Pretty cool! What do you use to get the wort out? I see a bulkhead, but what is the hose clamp holding? I'm just looking for other ideas to make mine stop leaking. Thanks and Cheers!

the hose clamp is holding that mesh braid on to a brass nipple (haha.. nipple). the wort is strained through the mesh, and runs out through the ball valve in the front. with the way my mash tun channels the wort in the center, i lift the back end up ever so slightly to help it run in the right direction. this design works far better than my previous 3 mash tuns of various other designs (false bottom, copper manifold, pvc manifold)
