You wouldn't be looking for much carbonation in an English style cask ale.

Yes, you are right. Sorry for the confusion. But, I still wouldn't want to put cheap wine or inferior beer in a new barrel. Mostly because it will get into the wood and flavor the barrel, and then you are stuck with it. I'd much prefer to fill it with water and let it sit a few days (this is what I've done in the past), and not have to worry about the cheap stuff.



If you used clean water, you could use what comes out of the barrel to blend back into a beer for controlled addition of the oak flavor.
