Son of a Fermentation Chiller variant

Sat Mar 24, 2007 11:24 pm

Has anyone used the Electrical Chiller or any homemade peltier/TEC chiller box?

It's a variant of Ken Schwarz's SoFC, but doesn't use any ice or other liquid coolant.
Looking at the Thermal Assembly, it looks like a peltier device.
Basically, a peltier device is like a window air conditioner,
extracting heat from an area and dumping it outside,
but without any moving parts.

Below is link for a homemade peltier cooler for a small 12qt igloo cube.

Ideally, it'd be a two vessel chill box similar to the Mother of Fermentation Chillers.
Any thoughts on building a Peltier/TEC SoFC variant?
Think an 80watt TEC could sufficiently cool it?

There is a home draft unit that works on this principal. It is called "The Suds Buddy".

I have all the parts already and will be building one this week! I bought a huge TEC off ebay and an using a computer power supply for power. I'll post pix of construction and the finished product when I can.

I am also building one. This will be for a conical. I have the pieces ordered and I am still working on the drawings for the insulated box itself. I will also take pictures and post details as I progress.

What size peltier are you guys using? How cold do you think it would get 5 gallons? It would be nice to convert my SoFC. No more ice bottles and then I could probably get two carboys in there.

My folks have one they keep it on their patio during the summer and it keeps drinks frosty cold.

What kind of temperatures do you average with the simple fan and ice bottles?
