Brix to Gravity

Sat Oct 14, 2006 12:14 pm

This may seem like a baisc question, but after reading the manual to my new refractometer I don't know how to use the Brix% number I get. How does it translate to gravity. Any help would be get thanks

This is kinda a fucked up answer but deal with it...
It depends, The refractometer is only accurate PRE FERMENTATION.
Brix is approx 4x SG so 1 brix is 1.004 sg... there are a million online calculators that will give you technicly better results tho... I thing online-conversion.com may even have it.

Bub is on the right track. The actual conversion is some bizarre formula best left to the calculators in your brewing software. At the practical level, when you need a quick check on your gravity, such as during your boil, just multiply your brix by 4. For example if towards the end of your boil you measure 15 brix, your gravity is about 1.060. Anyway it is plenty close enough for what we do.

If your using brewing software like Beersmith or Promash, they have a brix to SG converter. They also can calculate the FG using the refractometer.

BYO Had an article on this (including Plato...they say that the calculation will work for Brix as well)

1 degree Brix = .004 SG (There by, 0 Brix = 1.000)
