Which grinder should I get?

Fri Apr 10, 2009 12:57 pm

Don't know if I want the Barley Crusher, Malt Mill, or just a Corona Mill. Or something else...

Help me out, BN.

Been discussed quite a bit in the past. A ton of people swear by the Barley Crusher, especially if you are not handy or too busy to build your own hopper. I am holding out for a 3 roller monster mill, just because the price ain't that much more, and it sounds to me like a better way to completely extract the starch out of the husk.

What makes their new 2" diameter worth the $229 versus their older 1.5" model at $149?

I'm handy when I really want to do something. How difficult is a hopper?

As difficult as you want it to be. I saw one once that a dude made out of canvas. Sewed the pyramid shape, snapped in some gussets and then wrapped it with some cotton rope. It was so friggin dope - but the guy said it took him a LONG time...

The bigger diameter rollers are supposed to make more contact with the grain. I'm not convinced its worth another c-note.

I guess you would have to figure out the first derivatives for each point on the curvature of the 2 rollers as it relates to the average size grain..... Probably not worth it. :)
