Stainless Steel kettle question.

Mon Feb 02, 2009 7:18 am

I have a new more beer stainless steel kettle I was using it for the first time this weeked with my camp chef burner. I was just boiling water to calculate my evaporation rate before I used it for beer. I used water from my hose with no filter and after the boil was done there were a bunch white spots on the bottom of the inside of the kettle. I wanted to know what could have caused this and what needs to be done to clean it out? I tried to use a new soft sponge and soap water but that did not seem to remove it.

It's mineral and calcium deposits. Soak in PBW or lightly scrub it.
Prim: Broken Neck Wheat
Sec: Flander's Red, Old Ale, Oktoberfest, High Toast ESB
Bottled: Bunga Toggles, Saison Du Mont, SS Minnow Mild
Kegged: Scotch Ale, Incarcerator, Postin Bail Amber Ale

Actually, you will need something acid based for hard water spots. Starsan works well in a pinch.

Thanks for the info! I just listened to the Brew Strong Metal show again so that helped out. I am going to get some bar keeper’s friend and give it a try. They had mentioned that you want to scrub/clean the discolored parts of the stainless from the heat. Does anyone know if that is just inside the kettle or if you have the discolored spots from heat on the bottom and outside of the kettle if they also need to be removed?

After listening the Brew strong metal show I got some bar keepers friend. It works great. It cleaned up my brewpot like nothing else and with little effort. As I understood it, you want to get the discoloration off both sides of the pot. With a green scrubby and a paste like mixture of BKF it can be done quickly. I suggest though that you scrub in the same direction as the grain of the stainless. It helps keep the pot looking good.

Where did you get the bar keepers friend at? Any local stores like lowes/home depot or did you order it online?
