i tried searching the forum but i couldn't find anything. has anyone used one of these?

http://www.1000oaksbarrel.com/index.php ... &Itemid=27

seems like a good deal at $155 for a 5 gallon barrel.

i know it would need some conditioning. anything else to consider?

just remember with a 5 gal barrel there is a huge amount of surface contact. your beer will be oaked in very short order, especially with a new barrel. just sayin....good luck, Drew

Our LHBS just got some of these in. I'm dying to try them, but not ready.

The claims of creating great tasting liquors using cheap Vodka sound too good to be true.

I know some people have filled them up with water let it sit, then done that again before they prepped the barrel for the beer. Its just a personal preference thing

What about using one of these to serve out of, i.e. cask ale style. Maybe something you want a little oak flavor in. Fill it up a couple days before a party, and by the time you are serving it should be pretty good.

I have also been looking at one of these. http://cgi.ebay.com/20L-Wine-Rum-Tequil ... m153.l1262
With shipping this one would be about $135. They will also personalize the end of it with your logo or brewery name.

1000 oaks also has their stuff on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/Oak-Wine-Barrel-w-B ... m153.l1262
With shipping, their's comes to about $175.

Anyone know anything about either of these folks?
I was thinking along the lines of filling one with a cheap Cabernet wine from a local winery for a couple months to draw out the oak and add flavor to the barrel before putting a beer in there.

I have heard that it is a "surface area" thing, and correct me if I'm wrong - but isn't it a "time" thing too? Maybe the first batch you only have to leave in there for a couple of days.... next batch a week, third batch a few weeks, etc. ?
