i need a better burner

Wed Aug 06, 2008 12:25 pm

i have an inexpensive ( alright, i know it's cheap) burner i got from Academy sports center (yes, stainless steel), and it works pretty well, except that every time i brew, i have to take the pot off the burner and hose off the soot that accumulates on the sides and bottom. i let it go too long once, and it accumulated so much soot that it acted as an insulator and stopped the boil. does B3 or anyone else make a better cleaner burning burner that does NOT accumulate as much soot on the pot? if not, how can i stop the soot? i'm getting tired of pulling the mash tun off the burner every 10-15 minutes. probably gonna have to have 2 burners, since the recirc is losing too much temp in the process.

Sounds like your mixture is too rich. You need to get some air in there to turn the flame a nice, hot blue. Check the air intakes and make sure that they are not filled with cardboard.

I have the same problem. I've cleaned the lines with a long brush, and still... I can't seem to get a blue flame.

Any other tips?

Sugar free candies will do the trick. Specifically, you should try the sugar free jelly beans. Just don't eat too many or you will know why there is a warning on the package. Eat some beans wait a few hours - add a lighter = blue flame!
