Moving wort from kettle to conical

Sat Jul 19, 2008 7:27 am

I was wondering what the best method to transfer 10 gal of wort from my boil kettle to a conical. My problem is that the conical is on a stand and the boil kettle is lower than the conical, so I assume that I have to use a pump. Is this correct? If so, is a March pump ok to use if I run starsan through first and then transfer from boil kettle to the conical? Any help would be appreciated.

In short, yes. If you want to use gravity, you will need to lift the kettle up high and still need to sanitize some tubing with star san. Why not be lazy and use the pump?

Starsan through a pump = fire extinguisher. Too much foam. Try saniclean. I sanitize my pump by running boiling wort through it for the last 10 min of the boil. Then I use it for the Jamil-O-Chiller. Since it's never disconnected, it's still sanitary and I use it to pump into my carboys.
