Adjusting NG burner under keggle

Fri Jul 18, 2008 7:13 am

I just test-fired my set-up last night. I have a stove range hood over the keggle that is on high and I have a window and door open when I do this.
I have the 32 tip NG burner and welded up my own keggle stand.

The first time I tried it, I had the burner about 2" below the stand (which is 1.5 inches thick square tubing), so the effective distance to the actual bottom of the keggle is maybe 5". Anyway, opening the valve any more than 1/8 caused NG flames to go around the keggle. I can only operate on very small openings.

What I tried last night was to make a stainless shield about the size of the ID of the keggle bottom, and that extends from the top of the stand to maybe 4" down and nearly the same height as the burner. With this setup I can use slightly more flame, but it still is rolling outside the keg (I will need to adjust the shield better because there is a gap).

So tonight I'll try 8" or so deep shield.

But there's still a LOT of NG smell when I lit it. All the tips were flaming.

Any suggestions?

Smaller burner? I haven't picked one yet, but I'm under the impression that even the 23 tip burner can be borderline too big for a boil keggle. -Eric

On Draft: Nothing. Building a walk-in cooler right now.
