It won't filter out bacteria and the like, but it is good at getting rid of charcoal. I'd think that the type of filter you need really would depend on the type of water you have. What aspects of your water are you looking to improve?

Here's the one I got:

I also shop at Home Depot, I say that cause they sell that exact one but I got a different model. I got a dual cartridge design. Even though that model that you got offers nice and easy cartridge removal it's fed with only quarter inch feed lines. I on the other hand chose the model with the larger screw off removable sump type canisters. These housings have large 3/4" pipe thread openings that allow me to convert to a garden hose immediatly. In addition I used two cannisters ganged together to use the "best" smart water cartridges they offer, which of course I don't have the model number available at the moment but it's the combo with a gray cartridge and a white mesh covered one with green caps. This one supposedly takes out EVERYTHING! Now since that filters out "most" I go one step further by adding a crunched up camden tablet to my now filtered fifteen gallons in the HLT to address chloramine issues. Thats what I brew with!

yeah, mine's installed on my sink, so the smaller lines weren't that big a deal for me (except, it does take considerably longer to fill my pots up.) I didn't want to go for the super duper get it all out filter because we also use this for drinking water, and I didn't want it stripping out flouride. Plus, our water wasn't that bad to begin with.

And yes, It was a Home Depot special (heh) They just built a Home Depot about 3 miles from my house. w00t. :P
