I hadn't thought of that. Thanks Bugeater!

As for a source, two of my local micros will sell reject kegs for their scrap price. The good news is I was told that most (like 90+%?) of their rejects are rejects because the keg gets damaged where it attaches to the filling machine. And of course we cut that part off.

Take it back to the distributor that sells the beer that was named on the stickers and get the deposit back. While there Explain where you got it and ask if they have any damaged kegs they would trade you. They most likely won't but at least you get the deposit back and can buy one that is not stolen.

Not trying to start a war of words about "stolen" kegs here... But, have you tried to return a keg to a BMC brewery? A friend of mine tried very hard to do this. He contacted the brewery, they said to contact a distributor, he contacted a distributor, they said take it back to a retailer, the retailer asked for a receipt, when he didn't have one they referred him back to the distributor, who by this time didn't want to take the time to talk to him. He didn't give up there. We have a mutual friend who owns a craft brewery, he contacted him for help to return the kegs to their rightful owner. The result was similar... a person who wants to do the right thing - return the kegs and get the deposit value back - and no-one in the industry who is willing to take them.

Now I DO NOT advocate using a deposit keg as a kettle. But I think it is interesting that people think it is "easy" to return a keg to a large brewery.

I wouldn't bother with shining it. Put the insulation to it.

Yeah a buddy of mine bought a house over a year ago that had a keg in the backyard. He ended up with pretty much the same results. It's still sitting there.
Pri: Community Nudity Ale, Magician Red Ale, Berliner Weisse
Bottled: Paxton's Tripel and Dubbel, 400 Rabbits Ale, Cap'n Crunch Amber Oat Ale

In that case they refused the keg and have no complaints about it. It works different around here. The distributors will return kegs to each other as needed. So will the breweries. One brewery is so tight with them they do not scrap then until they are no longer fixable. Have one with a bullet hole in it? Pull the stem and weld it on a good keg with a bad stem.

Would still get something in writing. I have a canceled check for the 10 kegs I bought at a brewery for scrap. Reminds me I need to ask for more.
