Size of my Mash Tun

Tue Feb 19, 2008 3:37 pm

Hello,

I am using a 5 gallon bucket with a false bottom for my mash tun. I would like to upgrade to a cooler, and also be able to do 10 gallon batches.

My question is this. Is a 50 quart ice cube cooler from igloo too small to do 10 gallon batches? There is a store in town that sells them for about $20. I could get a bigger one, but that would cost much more. (I'm a tightass right now)

Depending on the grain bill of your 10 gal batches, i think you shouldn't have a problem with it. I use a 60 qt cooler and have no problems with space limitations.

I have the blue 48 qt ice cube. I've done many 10 gallon batches in it. It can get a little tight if you go big though. I did 26lbs of grain and it ended up 1.061 OG. That was my limit I'm sure.

I have the ten gallon mash tun from B3, that's 40 quarts for the Short Bus Crew. (I had to look that one up) It caps out at about 30 lbs.of grain capacity with a thick mash for me and I can squeeze out a pre-boil volume of 13 gallons with starting gravity of about 1.070-1.075 if I really push it. If I'm shooting for a higher gravity, I need to supplement with extract. if you have Pro-Mash, you can screw with the numbers to answer your question with precision.
