I got gas

Wed Jan 23, 2008 2:15 am

Howdy,

What gas do people use??

I've just started using a 3 ring burner, hooked it up to the gas bottle from my bbq on the verandah.

Works really well (better than the stove) but the brew pot gets covered in black soot.

Any better options?

Cheers

The air vent is probably closed. Open it until you see blue flame. If that's not it, then clean out the spiders or lizards or whatever that have taken up housekeeping in the body of the thing. Worst case is that there is some casting slag in there that will have to be chiseled out.

I have heard that you can spread some dish soap on the bottom of the kettle to help prevent or at least clean up the soot.

That's correct Kace, but the air/gas issue must still be addressed. Getting the shutter adjusted is necessary for efficient use of gas. All that soot is fuel that did not get burned to produce heat. With the price of propane this is an issue that goes far beyond just the mess.

The air shutter needs to be adjusted until you see virtually no yellow flame. This ensures almost complete combustion.

I have the same problem. I tried regulating my air flow, but that didn't help.

I went to Wal Mart and got a can of spray on oven cleaner and soaked it down a while then cleaned it off. It helped for a few batches, but then a few later the black soot was back.

I just recently picked up a hurricane burner from Amazon for $25 I think will take care of the problem for good!

another thing to look at is a spider web inside the burner. Anything inside the burner housing will cause air and gas flow problems if you can take the burner apart and clean it good and reassemble.
