Large stirplate?

Fri Dec 07, 2007 8:24 pm

First time poster here.

I come from another forum based on the recommendation of someone else. I was told that it is believed that a "Doc" has either completed or in the process of completing a larger stirplate. I've searched but haven't really come up with anything. Does anyone know of details or pictures of this device might be laying around on this forum?

How large is large? If you mean one that will work with a 5000ml flask, then I did that with a combination of the instructions here http://onebeer.net/sp_howto.shtml and in the July '07 issue of BYO http://brewyourownstore.com/julyaugust07.html.

If you mean bigger than that, I do remember some discussion on one of the podcasts about building one that could stir a carboy, but I don't remember which one that was...

On a similar note, based upon what I've read to this point it appears building a stirplate has some trial and error. My questions are

Will the 80mm fan with hard-drive magnet get 3-4 liters os starter moving? (assuming you ge the right POT and can wire it of course)

What is the min-size you'd buy if you had the money and just did not want to deal with building one? Hanna 180M? Hanna 300M? Something else?

I built a double stir plate using 2 computer cooling fans and hard drive magnets in a single wooden box on one 12V transformer it will stir two 1 gallon starters with no problem but you will want a 1 1/2 to 2 inch stir bar. When I first assembled it I installed 1 new and 1 used fan. They were out of balance if I turned up the power to to get the used fan to stir a large starter the the new one would toss the stir bar off the magnet, easy fix replaced the used fan.
