filter sanitation required?

Thu Nov 29, 2007 10:41 am

I have a cloudy beer that I want to filter. I have the filter and just need to do a little plumbing to hook it up between two kegs. My question is this.

Is sanitization of the filter required before use? Or can I simply flush the system with clean warm water before use?

My though is that it need not be sanitized because the beer, once filtered, will never be above 40 degree f in the kegerator, and will only be around fro a month and a half max after filtration.

Any thoughts?

That is a good question.

I always fill mine with StarSan, then push the StarSan out with CO2, then throw away the first 250-500ml of beer that comes through but I don't really know if that's all necessary or not. Are filter pads are considered sterile/sanitized right out of the bag?

I always use starsan as well, but have read that the foaming action can be a pain in the ass when pushing it around under pressure, which is what would occur in this situation.

I don't think that the filter pads would be "sanitary" out of the bag, but if they are clean enough to touch your drinking water they can't be too far from it.

an interesting solution I heard was to re introduce yeast. Cal Ale then chill to near freezing. this dropped out haze. Ive never tried so I cant verify but it sounded interesting
