Why conicals are better - any good documents?

Thu Jul 05, 2007 4:59 pm

Can someone please point me to any good articles explaining if conical fermentation produces better beer than using glass carboys? Other than the convience of dumping trub and collecting yeast I am at a loss to find any articles explaining why they might make a better beer. I have searched extensively and cannot find anything in books or forums.

Appreciate your assistance.

I don't think you will find any because I don't think it makes a bit of difference. It is just a different way to get the same place.

The only thing I have ever seen about the quality of beer produced in conicals is that if the depth of the wort gets too deep, the pressure on the yeast at the bottom has a detrimental effect. This should concern you only if you are using huge commercial conicals. Some of the trappist breweries only fill their conicals half full in order to deal with this problem. If I remember right, this is mentioned in Brew Like a Monk.

The real reason for using a conical is that it makes you sexy and irresistible to women. 8)

I am not aware of any literature on the matter, but if you listen to the archived show from 1/28/07 Colin from Downtown Joes pontificates on the proper use and advantages/disadvantages of common fermentation vessels; plastic, glass, and stainless steel conical.

I am not one to be dazzled by shiney objects and do not have a conical for homebrewing, but I will have to agree with BUG about it making you sexy and irresistible to women :P  :o

Thank you very much Homegrown Hops for the tip.
Just got done listening to a most interesting discussion on the show.
Also caught your forum name being mentioned, congrats on the new job.

I can now see where S/S conicals could be superior when brewing pilsners. Looks like its an even draw with glass carboys when it comes to ales though. Great information.

...and i thought it was the Porsche that made me so sexy and irresistable to women. Must be, cause I don't have a S/S conical ....yet.

I have to disagree. I have a conical WITH temperature control... and my girlfriend still finds me quite resistable and only moderately handsome.

A conical fermenter is at the top of my list for my next upgrade. Guess I'll have to wait until I file my 2007 taxes. :o
