I brillo'd my old kettle to remove burned-on extract, I guess you are not supposed to, but even with a brillo pad, it took me 45 minutes to remove the burn. So, in cases like that, what am I supposed to do? Rub lotion on the damn thing?

Sort of. After doing that scouring with the Brillo, polish it with a paste of BKF. That will passivate the scratches in the stainless. As long as no chunks of the steel wool got stuck in the scratches, all will be well.

Thanks!!! I just happen to have BKF in my cupboard 'cause I have a ceramic range top... I'll give it a shot!
