Ghetto fly sparge set-up

Thu Feb 15, 2007 1:45 am

I was listening to an archive in the car last night (can't remember which show) and the guest mentioned having the hose from their HLT below the surface of the sparge water in the mash tun when sparging?

Could I replicate this at home? Could I simply run a hose from my HLT into the mash tun and adjust the flow to keep the water level of the mash tun just above the end of the hose? No more fancy-pants spinning sparge arms or buthered shower-head set-ups? Just a hose?

that's how I used to do it... although I put a Plate or saucer or foil or something at the end of the hose so it wouldn't "eat away" at the grain bed... My suggestion would be to just batch sparge and forget about it all tho.

Yep. Go for it.

Bub is right, though. Put a piece of brewer's duct tape (aluminum foil) over the top of your grain bed and poke holes all over it with a fork or something.

Fred has a B3 sculpture. I have a ghetto system. We compared sparge devices at a recent group brew.

When all was said and done, they both made beer.

For fly sparging I have a wire mesh colander that I smashed flat and cut to the appropriate size to sit over the grain bed. It works very well to keep the grain bed from getting disturbed. It's sort of like a reusable piece of aluminum foil with more open area.

You don't have to have a Ph.D. in chemistry to brew beer, but it doesn't hurt.
