Is my kettle to big?

I have a 15 gallon kettle that is 17" across. I do 6 gallon batches, so at the end of the boil I would only have about 6" inches of wort in the bottom. Is this going to be a problem?

No. I do 5-6 gallon batches in my large kettle all the time. As long as you know your boil off and dead space, you can adjust your preboil amount to still hit your volumes.

It will work, but you may run into other issues that you may need to learn to work around. If you're into cloning/using other recipes you'll have a more difficult time dialing them at first. Which wouldn't concern me at all, but to some it might. On the flip side you'll be using far less energy compared to a more 'traditional' kettle geometry. Either way you look at it, it beats the pants off having a 8g kettle with that batch size.
