Stainless Fermentors

Fri Nov 04, 2005 9:33 am

I have a line on a pair of 316 stainless conical tanks for the right price. I believe they can be easily modified to make fermentors. Anyone have a few pics or advice on the valving for these

Oh, lid recommendations also. if you could be so kind

Thanks

Patience is a virtue folks,

At a dollar a hopper I am rushing no one. Besides, I am not sure what I really want to do yet and I need to find out who Mr Labatt here in London uses for sanitary welding.

Also I am trying to figure out if I want to jacket them. I notice Doc has jacketed fermentors. Can you drop your hot wort temp using that or is just for temp control?

So much to think about. But to answer the question I don't see them up and running much before the New Year

Doc has mentioned on a couple shows that his chiller gets the wort down to lager temps in like 15 mins. I'd imagine he doesn't need the fermenter to cool it much if he can do that before it ever gets there.

Yes, I can cool down the wort temp, but I get it in the ballpark w/ a CFC first. It's just more efficient that way. But you would still need some sort of temp module on it. A better way to go would be to fabricate the stand so the conical can fit into a 2nd fridge.

Though the jackets would keep the ferm temp from swinging wildly up and down. This is important to the yeast. (they're not swingers)

Concur with the stability, hate the banana beer

Brew house temps are pretty steady (10 feet underground), and I have my eye on a nice plate heat exchanger which should do a good job at dropping the temp. (Bumped into a sanitation issue with my old heat exchanger while brewing a coconut beer, like the idea of being able to clean everything with the plate style, another story) But like all of us I like the toys.

Don't see an opertunity to adapt a fridge, room is an issue believe it or not.

Hoppers already come with 316 stainless stand although it looks like I will have to modify a lid, likely get that done at the samr time as the valving.
