? on Jamil's Whirlpool immersion Chiller

Tue Oct 06, 2009 4:43 pm

So I've got everything cut and bent for the copper return arm, I just need to solder it.

My question is this, I want to build a pickup tube for the kettle spigot, but there are two things that I'm not sure of.
1. Is this necessary at all, with the whirlpool and everything?
2. Will this restrict my flow? For recirculating, I'm sure that the faster, the better and I don't want to have a pickup and the whirlpool competing with each other, after all they are supposed to serve the same purpose.

Thanks for any input,

Yellow.

Thanks Push. I couldn't have asked for a more authoritative source on this. Wort-o-matic kicks ass by the way.

Your response was a little wordy though. I prefer brightly colored pictures.

My flat bottomed boil pot has no pickup tube and seems to work just fine with the Jamil-o-chiller. If you are using a converted keg, then you probably do want a pickup so you don't leave half your wort behind.

DannyW makes an excellent point. If you have a flat bottomed kettle I'd go with a diverter plate.

Thanks for the kind words.

I do have a flat bottom, thank you for asking.

So is there an easy way to make a diverter plate without welding in a flat botom kettle? Or is a pickup tube angled to the side of the kettle that alternative to welding?

Thanks guys.
