Just be careful. I've watch and heard of a number of brewers being hurt by carboys that have "never had any problems before."

Yeah, I've switched the to the better bottles mostly but I still have a 6.5 gallon and 2 5 gallon class carboys that are still in the mix

I kegged out of one of the glass carboys last night and that was a slippery mother. I could totally see dropping one by mistake

I was thinking of trying my first lager, I only have the analog temp also. IS taping it to the side really going to work that well?

If you put some form of insulation (bubble wrap, an old sock) between the temp. probe and the tape, you'll be fine.

What do you guys think if this. SS probe and +/- 2 deg. Just dangle into carboy and be good.

It should be a good temp. controller. I'm not quite sure that I would "dangle it into the carboy," though. Well....it is stainless...I don't know. I'm interested in seeing what others have to say.
