Re: Jamil's Wort Chiller and a face full of hot Wort

Great advice, DCBC. I put bleed valves on both of my pump outputs on the new rig. The real problem here is that you still have air in the hose going up to the chiller. Even if you get a smooth prime, you are still going to have some sputtering until the air is completely out of the line. Jamil's advice to hold the whirlpool output out of the wort and slowly crack the valve (after you have the pump head wet), will reduce the spashing.

Ahhhh, I see what you're getting at. I'll have to add that to my to-do list for next time. Of course, if that's the most 02 I get in my wort, I may just consider myself lucky.

Anything I can do to reduce it though is surely a good thing.
I've consumed all of my homebrew. I'm worried. I can't relax. Now what?

I just used my pump for the first time with the whirlpool chiller and 'I thought' I kept losing the prime, which was the case at times. The flow started nice, then quickly went to all foam. Reprime, then foam again, dropping to merely a trickle.

So I was pretty jerked after repriming a few times and was ready to go back to my plate chiller. Took about 30 minutes to get 6 gallons down to 80 degrees..ugh. Once I was done, I found the culprit...a hop bag was sucked up into my pickup tube.
