What size burner??

Fri May 01, 2009 1:38 pm

I'm gathering parts to build my system. Decided to go natural gas instead of LP so as not to run out mid-brew. My question is: for a 10 gallon system, which burner should I get, 100k BTU or 160k BTU? One thing to keep in mind is that I may make 5 gallon batches from time to time, so I don't want to worry about scorching. Is one better than the other, or are they close enough in output that it won't make a difference?

Well.... Lonnie used the 56K ones on his original Brutus - and he told me that sometimes is tough to keep a big 12+ G boil going VI-GER-OUSE-LY. I just purchased the a 92K LP one for my HLT - but I haven't tried it out yet. I do 10G batches. Previously I used some crappy 50K turkey fryer burners on my stand with "just fine" results - providing the wind wasn't kicking.

Intuitively I would think that you shouldn't need a 160K burner - unless maybe you are doing 20 - 50Gs. However, I think I heard somewhere that LP burns hotter than NG - so maybe you should go for the 160K after all....

100K BTU burners aren't necessary, in my experience. I get a nice rolling boiling going using my natural gas burners which are 56K BTU.
