butane torch for yeast handling

Fri Apr 10, 2009 4:28 am

All,
I just purchased a butane torch for yeast handling http://morebeer.com/view_product/19910/102367/Torch, but seem to be having a difficult time finding the butane replacements. When I go in to stores to ask, people look at me like I’ve got lobsters crawling out of my ears...any advice?

I was gonna add Home Depot, but looked at the item. Butane? I haven't seen butane lately except in places that sell cigarettes.

Does it have a fixed reservoir that you refill, or does it use a disposable bottle?

If it's a fixed reservoir then I expect you need the type of filler that's used for butane lighters. I gotta say though, that butane lighters are a pain in the butt. It seems like they refill fine the first couple of times, and after that they won't hold a charge. Maybe the technology is better than it used to be.

All you really need for yeast culturing is a bunsen burner or an alcohol lamp. Right now I use an alcohol lamp. If I ever get gas plumbed into my brew room I'm gonna go with a bunsen, but it's not a real high priority.
